Pregnancy And The Formation of Itchy stretch marks
Pregnancy usually causes the formation of various stretch marks in the belly, thighs and breast area. These are often characterized by small raised reddish brown spots that are itchy at the same time. The stretch marks are caused by the tearing of the skin due to overstretching. The itchiness that comes along with it may be caused by different factors. It may be caused by the dry skin that comes with excessive stretching. Due to the thin layer of skin, it becomes more sensitive and thus more prone to itchiness. Increased levels of hormones such as estrogen during pregnancy may also induce itchiness of the stretch marks. Another factor may be caused by the increased blood flow to the area due to the damage to the skin. As the body tries to repair the damage, it increases its blood flow to the area which may cause itchiness, similar to a wound itching when it is starting to heal.
Treatment of these itchy stretch marks is usually by application of steroid creams that is prescribed by a doctor. This is important especially in pregnant women as some creams may be harmful to your baby. You can also avoid aggravation of the itchiness by using unscented soap and moisturizers.
