Treatment Options to Get Rid of Severe Acne

by Susan Lane

All types of acne can be divided into two categories, mild and severe. Some examples of mild acne are pustules, whiteheads and blackheads. For severe acne there are also a few different types, cystic acne is the one that we are going to take a closer look at in this article.

Because of its severity, cystic acne is the worst form of acne. Its consequences are more serious than other types of acne. One of the main characteristics of this type of acne is a deep infection in the tissue that can form nodules. Another denomination for this type of acne is acne vulgaris. Acne cysts or acne nodules, are formed when sebum cannot properly outflow to the surface of the skin and causes lesions to the cells lining the walls of the sebum canals. Our body fights the infection producing inflammation of the area where the pores have been blocked. An acne cyst is the consequence of an extreme reaction of the body towards a severe infection.

When the body reacts in this way, the outflow of sebum starts. If the flow of sebum exceeds the normal level, bacteria in the follicles and skin surface will produce a larger infection. Moreover, the excess of sebum on the skin helps increase the appearance of large pimples caused by greater inflammations, bacterial and an oil surplus.

Understanding Cystic Acne

Retention keratosis is a condition that can worsen facial cysts. Retention is caused when dead skin cells are not properly released into the skin surface. Improper disposal of cells leads to the clogging of these follicles. The infection can then spill onto other follicles which increase the inflammation and causes acne cysts to spread.

Another factor that may contribute to nodulocystic acne is hormones. Testosterone and androgen hormones can help to increase sebum levels. Cysts are formed as a consequence of sebum ducts being clogged since they impair the normal sebum outflow. The lifestyle and the genetic background of a person also influence the severity of acne. Stress behavior can contribute to or even increase acne.

Treating acne cysts is possible despite the fact that they are very serious and the severe acne condition seems beyong the possibilities of products for severe cystic acne treatment. A helpful option is an oral medication called Accutane. It is designed to decrease the oil glands therefore slowing down oil production. The success rate of Accutane is as high as 80% on the other hand; severe side effects like depression have been seen in some patients. It is recommended that this drug only be taken if all other methods have failed.

Another treatment available is a cortisone injection which can be administered by a dermatologist. The injections provide instant relief of the area affected, reducing its redness and inflammation. After the injection is administrated the pimple is lowered to the skin level making it less noticeable. Some of the problems that may occur after receiving the injection are temporary skin discoloration and bleeding.

It may be difficult to cure cystic acne however it is not a lost cause. This type of acne requires a special acne skin care treatment since some could worsen the condition. Natural acne products are available that treat cystic acne as well as improve the skin in general.
